What Ramadan means to Eshna Arora

As we reach out to our community to help those around us find meaning and inspiration when celebrating the Holy Month of Ramadan, so too does our community reach out to us to share what their experiences with Ramadan mean to them.

In this post, Eshna Arora, a Strategic Accounts Manager for Zomato in the Emirates has given us the opportunity to read another story of the meaning this month has to those around us. A transplant, like many of us, perhaps her story will have some familiarity to our own stories and help us to connect with some of the more universal feelings attached to celebrating Ramadan.

“Three years ago, I got to the UAE smack in the middle of summer and remember thinking to myself, ‘Eshna, what have you done?’ As the days got hotter, we inched closer to Ramadan – this would be my first. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous!

All my concerns and apprehensions were put to rest – there was a veil of serenity across Dubai and it was beautiful to experience this first-hand. I was greeted with warm smiles, fervent chants of ‘Ramadan Kareem!’ and dates to have me ready for Iftar, everywhere I went.

Even at work, there was so much love in the air and respect for all those who were fasting. On the day of our team Iftar experience, we truly saw what the occasion meant… it was about thanking God for his graciousness that was bestowed on all of us, and celebrating with loved ones and families. Three years hence, I am still as excited and enamored about Ramadan.

The quote, ‘When you have more than you need, build a longer table not a higher fence’ couldn’t be more true to describe the warmth and generosity I have witnessed; I am truly grateful.”

It is our hope that these stories inspire you to find connections to your community, your religion, and your surroundings each and every day of the month ahead. Like Eshna, we will all likely feel overwhelmed at times, but it is the calm and the piety in between that makes the sacrifice worth it to each and every one of us.
