What Ramadan Means To Chef Tobias of La Ville Hotel & Suites CITY WALK Dubai

Tobias Taubner, Executive Sous Chef, La Ville Hotel & Suites City Walk Dubai, Autograph Collection shares memories of his first time experiencing Ramadan and fasting in the Middle East.

Just a few months after arriving in the Middle East, Ramadan was already around the corner. It was something very new and unfamiliar to me as I had only heard of it briefly and I didn’t really know what to expect.

I was especially curious about why Iftars were so special for my Muslim colleagues and so I joined them in fasting to see how it feels. I only managed to fast for a week but felt and understood the excitement for the meal after sunset after a long day. This week of fasting also taught me a lot of respect for everyone fasting and especially for my fellow chefs who have food all around them during the day.

One day during a pre-opening period, all chefs still took time out of their busy schedules to come together to prepare an Iftar together for the whole culinary team. It was an unforgettable evening for everyone – having so many nationalities and religions sitting together, preparing their favourite family recipes and sharing stories about their culture and traditions – it brought everyone closer together as a team.

Now after a few years living here, I really enjoy the time of the Holy Month. With the daytime being a little less hectic than usual, it allows us to calm down and take the time to reflect and think. And of course, going out with friends for Iftar is still a highlight for a Chef every year.
